Science

At St Catherine of Siena, we strive to foster a healthy curiosity about the world around us and our universe, encouraging our pupils to ask questions about how and why.

Our curriculum ensures progression across the school from the EYFS to Year 6, reflecting the National Curriculum.  We believe STEM encompasses the acquisition of knowledge, concepts, skills and positive attitudes and throughout the science programme of study, all children will acquire and develop these key foundational skills.  This ensures their scientific mind-set will be taken beyond primary school.

Throughout St Catherine of Siena, children will explore the 5 types of scientific enquiry which builds on their subject-knowledge and working scientifically skills:

  • Fair and Comparative Testing
  • Pattern Seeking
  • Changes Over Time
  • Secondary Sources
  • Identifying, Classifying and Grouping.

Regular events take place to instil the curiosity of science form a young age, including:

  • VIsiting scientists
  • Trips
  • Extra-curricular activities
  • Links with Bishop Challoner.
  • Science Week.

National Association for Environmental Education (NAEE)

St Catherine's have been working closely with the NAEE, looking at how we can foster our children's understanding, curiosity and ability to preserve our environment.  We have been sent this wonderful publication where our Y3 class is featured along with some wonderful photographs and quotes from our children.
