Maths

At St Catherine's, we strive to instil a love of mathematics in all of our children. We believe that by embedding the powerful knowledge, skills and mathematical vocabulary, all of our children can grow into confident, creative, life-long mathematicians with limitless potential.

Useful Websites

At St Catherine's, we follow an adadpted version of the WhiteRose 3.0 scheme of work which allows the children to develop a deep understanding of the mathematical concepts set out in the National Curriculum.  Our adaptation to this scheme reflect the needs of our school cohort, providing repetition of topics where pupils may find difficulties.  This is consolidated further within the last half-term, focusing on the NCETM's Ready to Progress criteria.  See our overview for details.

Mastering Number

From Autumn 1 2022-2023, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 will be taking part in the NCETM's Mastering Number programme with the intent for children to make connections within number, make good progress towards Early Learning Goals and National Curriculum objectives, be confident in communicating their ideas and develop a positive attitude towards mathematics.

These sessions take place 4 times per week for 10-15 minutes.

The Borcherds Shield King Edwards Maths Competition

Each year, four gifted and talented mathematicians in Years 4 and 5 are selected to take part in the King Edwards Borcherds Shield Maths Competition.  This involves a range of schools in the Birmingham area coming together to compete with Mathematical challenges.  We are proud to say that each time we take part, we do extremely well.  We work collaboratively with one another to calculate and reason.  Have a look at the cross-number activity below!

NSPCC Number Day 2023

At St Catherine’s, we took the time to celebrate the NSPCC’s National Number Day.  This was an amazing opportunity to build on last year’s successful Number Day.  Last year, we raised an amazing £170.10.  We are proud to say that we have beaten last year’s fundraising total with an amazing £189.96!  Well done, St Catherine’s!  We did this by bringing in a donation as we dressed up as a number.  We spent the whole day with fun mathematics activities.  This ranged from Graffiti Maths to solving mathematical challenges as a group.  Y2-Y6 took part in a spectacular times tables competition where children logged onto Times Table Rockstars for 30 minutes.  Year 5 were the champions!  Well done!

A massive well done for our classes’ Most Valuable Players: Melissa (Y2), Eferson (Y3), Money (Y4), Dean (Y5) and Vanessa (Y6)!

Xin Tong (Nur): “I liked number story.”

Ridharv (Nur): “I liked making my own numberblocks.”

Jojo (Rec): “Wow! (when he saw us dressed as number blocks.)”

Samuel (Rec): “We’re helping children who need our help for food and clothes.”

Leon (Y1): “I enjoyed decorating biscuits and making the number 7 with sweets.”

Justin (Y1): “I was excited to wear my favourite number.”

Michelle (Y3): “It was fun and educational.”

A’marni (Y3): “Number Day was fun and helped us learn about childline.”

Ziqing (Y4): “I enjoyed the ‘how many triangles are in this diagram’ because it was fun to count triangles.”

Aurora (Y4): “I enjoyed doing the Times Tables Rock Stars competition and breaking the code because it was fun.”

Mosiah (Y5): “I liked learning about how Number Day helps the NSPCC make lives better for the children.”

Jaya (Y5): “I enjoyed coming together and using our brains to practise our times tables and see who can win.”

Matthew (Y6): “I enjoyed the TTRS Competition. I also liked playing games with Mr Minchin.

Vanessa (Y6): “I enjoyed play TTRS because it was fun to have a competition with the whole school.  My classmates and I were competing with each other the most!”

Mr Minchin: “A great day for a great cause!”

Mrs Weetman: “The children had a great day playing number games and learning about Number Day!

Miss Wilde: “Nursery really enjoyed exploring number.  They were very excited about numberblocks and counting steps, stamps and claps.”

Mr Woolman would like to thank all of the staff that have planned some wonderful maths-related activities to boost our children’s enjoyment of numeracy.  We are all very proud of the staggering amount of money we have raised and we want to make sure that all of our children are kept safe.

Christmaths at Bishop Challoner

Each year, St Catherine’s take part in a range of enrichment activities related to mathematics.  This year was no exception.  We took part in the very festive, ‘Christmaths’ competition at Bishop Challoner.

Aryan: “I enjoyed Christmaths because of all the challenging competitions against other schools (8).”

Samuel: “I enjoyed the part when we made Jon’s house.”

Daniel: “I enjoyed the jolly competitions; I loved Blooket!”

Henry: “I really enjoyed the competitions, especially when we got to use a website called ‘Blooket’ to play mathematical games.”

Abigail: “I enjoyed playing Cluedo and how whenever we got 1, we would solve a maths problem.  We also got help.

The first activity involved a Maths game of Cluedo with three classes in our group.  St Catherine’s came second!  The next activity involved having maths questions to answer and after answering, they had to decorate a house – with more questions correct, the more decorations for the house.  A  Year 7 pupil from BC chose the most beautifully decorated house out of the group as the winner (which was us!).  The next challenge involved netbooks which had maths games on with a range of questions with 10 other challengers!  They only had 10 minutes and the top three scorers came up on the whiteboard which was three of our team!  This meant our school were the overall leaders out of the 8 schools at lunch!  After lunch, there was a relay race where we were able to consolidate our victory!  A massive well done to our Y5 Christmaths team!  Please see our Twitter for extra photographs!  @StCathRC

Mr Woolman would like to thank Mrs Kurila for taking the wonderful five to Bishop Challoner for the day: Aryan, Daniel, Abigail, Henry and Samuel.  A big thank you to Bishop Challoner for hosting the event as they do each year!

Well done, Year 5 pupils for winning Christmaths this year!
