Reading Skills

So far, we have all been thoroughly enjoying ‘The Railway Children’ myself included. We have now read to the end of chapter 4 when Bobbie has returned back after going to get Peter’s engine fixed at the railway. For your reading activity, I would like you to pick out the main parts of the story so far and summarise it in your own words. It is really important that you write concisely and include the main details. This can be done by typing it on the computer or writing it on a piece of paper or in a notepad.

Maths

Today, we would have been revising how to round to the nearest ten.

https://vimeo.com/452570761 Please access this video that White Rose have produced with some teaching points and then complete the worksheet which will be uploaded separately. Remember, if a number’s units are less than 5, we round down to the previous multiple of ten, if the units are 5 or more, we round up to the next multiple of ten.

English

Yesterday, I gave you all a sheet of paper from Mrs Kenny about a writing competition. You are to write a poem about a pet. Make this interesting. What figurative language could you include? Think of similes, alliteration, and metaphors. Will your poem rhyme?

PSHE

Today, I would like you to think about friendship. What qualities does a good friend need to have? I would like you to create a mind map (on the computer, piece of paper or notepad) of qualities you look for in a friend. Then. I would like you to write a prayer, asking God to help you grow as a friend and show these qualities every day. Remember that we do not start the prayer with Dear God, there’s many more ways we can start a prayer such as:

-          Heavenly Father

-          Almighty God

-          The Light of our world

Art

You will have two hours of art today, just like we would if we were in school.

For the first lesson, I would like you to draw some images that relate to ‘The Railway Children’.

After you have gathered images to depict the story, I would like you to create a piece of artwork about the railway and the house the children live in. This should be on A4 paper. You can be as creative as you wish. Try to add colour to your picture.

I have chosen some words from some of the chapters that we have read so far. Today I would like you to use a dictionary (you can always access a dictionary online https://dictionary.cambridge.org/) and define the words so that you know what they mean.

After marking the cold tasks this week, I noticed that lots of you are not using fronted adverbials. These are taught in Year Four and it is really important that we use them in our writing this year. I have attached a PowerPoint and worksheets for you to work through this week.

Spellings

I have attached the Year 5 and 6 list onto the website. I would like you to spend the day choosing 15 of the words that you would like to practise. Choose ones that you find more difficult to spell as this is a great time to practise them. I would like you to write the word out 3 times and then to write a sentence for ten of the words.
