Y6 Learning At Home

Lessons and Messages from Mr Minchin  x

Returning To School - Help & Advice

Remember! There's lots more activities to keep you out of mischief on the  LEARNING AT HOME page! ENJOY!

SEN Resources - Please find some resources and links that may be useful when supporting your child at home with their learning.

Year Six pupils, this will be the timetable for you to follow from now on whilst you’re learning from home. Every morning I would like you to check your emails for resources that I will send over, as well as instructions for things that you can do in English writing and some other subjects.

For science this week, I have sent over the ‘End of Year’ light quiz for you to complete. This doesn’t have to be done in test conditions, you can use the work you should have been completing over the last few weeks to help you! Once you’ve got your answers email them over to me and I will give you your score out of 10!

For the second part of your science this week I would like you to think about a topic that has interested you over the course of your time in St Catherine’s- this could be plants, evolution, the solar system of anything else! I would like you to spend your second hour this week (and both hours next week) creating a project about this! Be as creative as possible!

Art will be the continued doodle challenge- some of the ones I’ve been sent are excellent and I’m very jealous I can’t draw that well! The second doodle challenge has also been sent over to you all so use these for your artwork as well!

I’ve stopped being emailed these unfortunately. Please remember to send over the doodles that you are doing!

You’ve been given the links for two coding websites. Do these to keep your coding skills sharp!

During PSHE this week, we will be continuing to think about the transition to secondary school. I’ve been really pleased with the amount of work I’ve been sent for PSHE so please keep this up!

This week I would like you to reflect on the time you have had at St Catherine’s school (as sadly our time here is running out!). Using the following headings I would like you to create a poster, piece of artwork or any other creative format you can think of to summarise your time at our school. The headings are:

  • My happiest day
  • I have tried to
  • Greatest wish
  • I wish I could have
  • I would like to have been better at
  • I am sorry about

Please email these over to me as soon as you can!

This Monday, the 29th June, is a very important feast day in the Catholic Church as we celebrate the lives of Saint Peter and St Paul. For your RE work this week, all of your learning will be focused on these two saints.

Firstly, I would like you to research the lives of the two men as they were very different (Paul even changed his name!). Try to think about why Jesus chose them to be his disciples- what qualities did they have?

Following this, and for your second ‘hour’ of RE, I would like you to read Peter’s declaration which can be found in the bible using the reference: Matthew 16: 13-20. I would then like you to use thought bubbles to show how you think Peter would have been feeling. What did it mean to him to be the ‘rock’ on which Jesus would build His church?

In class on Monday morning, we will also be finding a live stream for a Mass about SS. Peter and Paul. If you would like the link then please email me and I’ll send it over

For your maths work this week I would like you to use the White Rose Hub daily lessons that are on the school website. If you’re finding these too easy then there is the option to access some of the Y7 activities as an extension! Alongside this please keep making your ‘cheat sheets’ like last week- these will be really useful for when we return to school!

I have also emailed over the maths sheets that we are working on in school this week! We will be working on area, perimeter and algebra (topics that were chosen by your classmates) so have a go at those sheets as well. There is loads of maths to keep you busy this week!

For those of you who have not yet sent me your narratives about the Mary Celeste: these need to be finished and emailed to me as soon as possible. This was an assessment so I need to see what you’ve produced!

For your English this week we will be continuing along the same theme of the Mary Celeste, but we will be working towards a non-fiction piece of writing about the event. Lots of you have already done the research so now it will be a case of putting it all together. You will see from your emails that I’ve sent the planning grids we use in class (thinking about context, audience and purpose) and this needs to be complete on Monday using the modelled writing as the text to analyse.

For the following two days I would like you to draft your own non-fiction text using the model and the sheets attached to help you. If you want to send your drafts to me via email then I can check how things read/change anything if I need to.

Once you’ve finished drafting I would like you to redraft your work to make a final ‘best’ piece of non-fiction work around this topic.

Any questions then feel free to ask. Remember you can send me any artwork/English/Geography or anything you’re really pleased with. If you’re struggling with work or want me to mark it then similarly you can email this over for feedback.

Keep safe and hopefully I’ll see you all soon!
